Richard Morales Jr. (born July 18, 1979), better known by his stage name Gunplay, is an American rapper signed to the Def Jam and Maybach Music Group record label.[1]

Music career

Triple C’s

In 1997, he met with Carol City native Rick Ross and their passion for music led them to make Triple C's (Carol City Cartel). The trio worked hard to build a buzz, later releasing their debut album Custom Cars & Cycles in 2009, which debuted at #44 on the U.S. Billboard 200.[3] Currently they are working on a collaborative album with rapper French Montana called Color, Cut & Clarity.

2009-present: Solo career and debut album

Gunplay made his solo debut on Rick Ross track Gun Play on the album Deeper Than Rap. He released mixtapes under Maybach Music Group[4] while appearing on featured tracks and making appearances on collaborative albums. In July 2012, he signed a solo deal with Def Jam and will be releasing his debut album Medellin, originally called Bogotá, under both labels. He announced that he was working with producers from the south and he will be collaborating with Pharell. His mixtape released September 2012 titled 601 & Snort has been well praised by critics and was named the tenth best album of 2012 by Spin Magazine.[5] One of his featured guest appearance songs, "Cartoon & Cereal" with Kendrick Lamar, was ranked in Complex's Best 50 Songs of 2012 list at #2.[6] His next mixtape is titled Cops & Robbers with a release date announced to be January 18, 2013.[7][8] With his debut album Medellín sceduled to be released in the second quarter of 2013.[9]

Personal life

He has one son and a wife but then the marriage deteriorated.[2]

Some controversy had stirred up when he got a Swastika tattoo. But in a recent interview, he explained what the meaning behind the tattoo was. He said that the tattoo is a symbol - there is too much crap in the rap game and he is going to straighten it out - "to put the fake rappers in the gas chamber".[10]

At 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards Gunplay was involved in an fist fight with members of 50 Cent's G-Unit affiliates backstage. 50 Cent was later seen in a video, bowling wearing Gunplay's MMG chain.[11]

Legal issues

TMZ had reported [12] that on Wednesday, October the 10th 2012, Richard Morales Jr. has turned himself in to Miami authorities, after a warrant has been issued for his arrest on charges of armed robbery.[13] Morales also faces a second charge of aggravated assault with a firearm. According to the rapper's attorney, Gunplay could face life in prison if convicted on both counts. On October 13 a video leaked of Gunplay committing the crime. After discussing some matters, the man purported to be Gunplay pulls out a pistol, and eventually takes a gold chain and money from his accountant. A third, unidentified man in the meeting, who appeared to have come with Gunplay, attempts to mediate the situation after which Gunplay leaves.[14] On October 22, 2012, he was given a id="mce_marker"50,000 dollar bond and house arrest in connection to the robbery which took place at a Miami tax business.[15]
